Has Social Media Made Travel Less Authentic?
Some travellers believed social media had fundamentally changed modern travel.
One of my favourite things about staying in hostels isn’t the cheap accommodation or the location.
It’s the conversations.
People from completely different backgrounds, cultures and generations all end up in the same common room, often discussing topics that never appeared on the itinerary.
While staying at a hostel in Penang, Malaysia, one question sparked an unexpectedly lively debate.
Has social media made travel less authentic?
Everyone had something to say.
Here are some of the opinions that came up that evening.
Emma, 24, Australia
“I honestly think it has.”
“I’ll arrive somewhere incredible and instead of people looking around, they’re looking at their phones.
Some spend twenty minutes trying to get the perfect photo and then leave without really experiencing the place.”
“For me, travel is about moments, not content.”

“I actually think social media gets a bad reputation.”
“If I hadn’t seen people travelling through Southeast Asia online, I probably never would have booked my first solo trip.”
“It inspired me to leave my comfort zone.”
“The problem isn’t social media. It’s forgetting to put your phone away afterwards.”

“I think social media has made everywhere feel the same.”
“The same cafés.”
“The same viewpoints.”
“The same poses.”
“I sometimes avoid places that become famous online because they lose the atmosphere that made them special.”

“I think people have always wanted souvenirs.”
“Years ago it was postcards.”
“Then it became digital cameras.”
“Now it’s social media.”
“The only thing that’s changed is the technology.”

“My family gets to see where I am.”
“My friends get ideas for future trips.”
“I don’t post for strangers.”
“I post because travelling is a huge part of my life.”
“I don’t think that makes it fake.”

“I’ve definitely caught myself thinking, ‘Would this make a good Reel?’”
“When that thought becomes more important than the actual experience, that’s when I know I need to put my phone away.”
“I’ve started leaving my phone in my backpack more often.”
“It’s made me enjoy travelling again.”

“I think social media has raised expectations.”
“People expect every beach to be empty.”
“Every sunset to be perfect.”
“Every trip to change their life.”
“But travel isn’t always beautiful.”
“Sometimes it’s delayed buses, getting lost, or eating terrible food.”
“And honestly, those are usually the best stories.”

“I don’t think social media changes travel.”
“It reveals people’s intentions.”
“If you’re travelling only for likes, that’s what you’ll get.”
“If you’re travelling to learn, connect and explore, social media won’t stop you doing that.”
“It’s all about why you travel in the first place.”
My Thoughts
Listening to everyone’s opinions, I realised there wasn’t a right answer.
Some travellers believed social media had fundamentally changed modern travel.
Others saw it simply as another tool—one that can either inspire adventure or distract us from it.
What struck me most wasn’t who was right.
It was how differently people experience the same journey.
Maybe authenticity isn’t something social media can take away.
Maybe it’s something we choose every time we arrive somewhere new.
