Rediscovering A Familiar Place

We change, our perspective shifts, and the things we once overlooked suddenly become the things we appreciate most.

When we travel, we're often looking ahead.

The next destination.

The next country.

Somewhere new to explore.

We want new experiences, new cultures, and new places to discover.

And sometimes, when we return somewhere we've visited before, we assume we've already seen what there is to see.

We've ‘done’ that place, so to speak.

But what if we haven't?

I've recently returned to Hanoi for what must be my seventh or eighth visit.

Initially, I saw it as somewhere to pass through on my way to the next destination.

I'd been here before.

I had already formed an opinion of the city, and while I didn't particularly love it, I didn't dislike it either.

It simply wasn't somewhere that held a particularly special place in my heart.

Yet something has changed this time.

Tomorrow, I'm leaving, and surprisingly, I feel a sense of sadness about it.

I've stayed less than a kilometre from where I stayed on a previous visit.

I've walked streets I've walked before, passed familiar buildings, and found myself crossing ground that should feel entirely ordinary by now.

But somehow, it doesn't.

I'm noticing things differently.

I'm appreciating corners of the city I might previously have walked straight past.

I'm enjoying the simple experience of being here without feeling the need to tick off attractions or follow a list of things I should see.

I'm just living in the city.

Perhaps it's the beautiful weather I am experiencing here.

Perhaps it's a change in my own mindset, or the person I've become since my last visit.

Maybe it's a combination of everything.

Whatever the reason, my appreciation for Hanoi has grown in a way I never expected.

And I think there's something beautiful in that.

We often assume that discovering somewhere new means travelling somewhere we've never been.

But sometimes, discovery comes from returning to a familiar place with a different perspective.

The streets haven't necessarily changed.

The buildings are still there.

The cafés are still serving coffee.

But we change.

Our priorities shift.

Our experiences shape us.

And the things we notice today might be completely different from the things we noticed yesterday.

Travel isn't always about finding somewhere new.

Sometimes it's about finding something new in a place you already know.

Perhaps we don't always need another destination.

Perhaps we simply need to give the places we've already visited another chance.

Because you never really know when somewhere you thought you had figured out might surprise you.

And sometimes, it's only when you're preparing to leave that you realise just how much a place has come to mean to you.
