The Road Doesn’t Have To Be Straight

It’s easy to think changing direction means you’ve failed or lost your way.

Most of us grow up thinking life should follow a straight line.

Go to school.

Find a job.

Build a career.

Buy a house.

Keep moving from one milestone to the next.

There’s nothing wrong with having a plan.

The problem comes when we convince ourselves it’s the only one worth following.

Life doesn’t always work like that.

Sometimes it throws in a turn you never expected.

Sometimes you take one yourself.

And often, that’s where the interesting stuff begins.

I was reminded of this while exploring Koh Samui.

The plan was simple enough.

Rent a motorbike, ride around the island and see a few viewpoints.

But looking back, it wasn’t the viewpoints I remember most.

It was stopping somewhere because it looked interesting.

It was taking a road we’d never planned to drive down.

It was finding a quiet beach that wasn’t on any list.

It was the conversations along the way.

None of those moments were planned.

That’s what made them memorable.

It’s easy to think changing direction means you’ve failed or lost your way.

Sometimes it just means you’re paying attention.

We spend so much time trying to work out exactly what comes next that we forget to notice what’s happening right in front of us.

Not everything worthwhile arrives with a plan.

Some opportunities show up unexpectedly.

Some friendships begin with a simple conversation.

Some of the best decisions you’ll ever make won’t make complete sense at the time.

You’ll only understand why they mattered when you look back.

Having goals is important.

They give us something to aim for.

But leaving a little space for life to surprise you is just as important.

You don’t have to have every year mapped out.

You don’t need every answer before you begin.

Sometimes the next step is enough.

Sometimes all you need is the confidence to take the road that wasn’t part of the original plan.

You might discover a place you never expected.

You might meet someone who changes your perspective.

Or you might simply learn something about yourself that you couldn’t have learned by staying on the path you thought you had to follow.

The road doesn’t have to be straight.

In fact, I’ve started to think the best ones rarely are.

The twists.

The detours.

The unexpected stops.

They’re often the parts of the journey you remember long after you’ve reached the destination.
