It was more emotional than I expected.

10. The Bus To The Airport
In the last chapter, I wrote about the final days before departure — the time spent with family and friends, the goodbyes, and a few practical things being sorted before leaving.
By that point, everything was ready.
The backpack was packed.
The ticket was booked.
Beyond that, there wasn’t much of a plan.
After saying my final goodbyes at my mum’s house, I made my way back to my dad’s place for one last night before leaving early the next morning.
That evening, before I went to bed, my dad surprised me with a small gift — a mini iPad.
It completely caught me off guard.
I hadn’t asked for it and certainly wasn’t expecting it.
But it was a very cool surprise and something that would become incredibly useful on the journey ahead.
More than anything, it was a thoughtful moment before everything was about to change.
The Final Goodbye
The next morning came quickly.
It was still dark when I woke up.
The house was quiet in that way it is before the day has properly begun.
My backpack was already packed and waiting by the door.
Not long after, my dad and I got into the car and drove to the bus station in my hometown.
The roads were empty and the world still half asleep.
When we arrived, the bus was already there waiting.
There wasn’t much time to linger.
And suddenly, the moment that had been building for months was right in front of me.
This was the final goodbye.
The last goodbye to a family member before leaving for the other side of the world.
It was emotional. More emotional than I expected.
Tears were shed and it’s a moment I can still picture clearly today.
But after that moment, there was no turning back.
I placed my backpack underneath the bus, climbed the steps, and took my seat.
The Feeling I’ll Never Forget
As the bus pulled away from the station, something came over me.
Not one single emotion — but all of them at once.
Excitement.
Fear.
Relief.
Adrenaline.
Months of doubt, uncertainty and questions had all led to this exact moment.
And now it was happening.
I remember sitting there with my headphones on, music playing, staring out of the window as the road slowly carried me towards Heathrow Airport.
More tears came.
Not out of sadness, but from the overwhelming nature of the moment.
For the first time, it was really just me.
No safety net.
No clear plan.
Just a one-way ticket to a place 6,000 miles away from the place I had always called home.
And strangely, despite the uncertainty, I felt incredibly alive.
Looking back now, I think this might have been the first real moment I experienced what I would later call the Nomad Mindset — long before I even knew what that was.
A feeling of stepping into the unknown and embracing it completely.
As the bus made its way down the motorway, my mind drifted.
I thought about everything that had happened over the past few years — the experiences, the work, the memories, the people. Everything I was leaving behind, at least for now.
Because the truth was, I had absolutely no idea when I would be back.
Would it be a few weeks?
A few months?
Even longer?
I genuinely didn’t know.
But deep down, I had a feeling that this journey was going to change me.
It felt almost like a calling.
Like this was exactly where I was supposed to be in that moment — sitting on that early morning bus, heading to the airport to begin a journey that would transform the way I saw the world.
The best way I can describe the feeling is something like the moment you pass your driving test.
That sudden rush of freedom.
The excitement of knowing the road is now open to you.
But this was something even bigger than that.
Much bigger.
It’s easily one of the top three or four moments of pure feeling I’ve ever experienced in my life.
And if I could bottle that feeling and share it with other people, I honestly would — because it’s something I have never forgotten, and something I know I never will.
After about an hour on the road, the bus finally pulled into Heathrow Airport.
The journey had officially begun.
And the next stop was checking in for my flight to Bangkok.
