Start With A Simple Hello

All it takes is one small moment to connect.

Not every piece of travel advice is about apps, transport, or what e-Sim, travel insurance or VPN to purchase before you head off on your travels.

Some of the most important lessons are simpler than that.

This is one of them.

Don’t be afraid to say hello.

Travelling solo can feel uncertain at the start.

New places

New cultures

Movement

Doubt.

You step into the unknown, and for a moment, everything feels unfamiliar.

But something shifts quickly.

You realise you’re not alone.

There are people everywhere on their own journeys too.

Different paths

Different reasons.

Same road.

And often, all it takes is one small moment to connect.

A simple hello.

A question.

A comment about where you are.

That’s it.

That’s how it starts.

I remember at the very beginning of my journey, a quick conversation in an airport turned into sharing a taxi into the city.

Later, arriving in Bangkok, a simple hello in a hostel turned into meeting people who shaped the early part of my trip.

Nothing forced.

Nothing planned.

Just small moments that opened doors.

Travel gives you freedom.

But connection gives it meaning.

It’s easy to sit back.

To stay in your own space.

To scroll your phone instead of looking up.

But the real experiences often sit just outside that comfort zone.

Even speaking to locals can go a long way.

You’ll be surprised how many people speak English, even if it’s not their first language.

And even if they don’t, a smile and a few words can still create something.

A moment.

A shared understanding.

A memory.

Sometimes it’s as simple as speaking to someone serving you food.

A quick chat.

A question about the area.

That conversation can turn into recommendations, local insight, or even meeting again later.

You never really know where it leads.

Simple Ways to Start a Conversation

Ask a question.

“Have you been here long?” or “Is this place good?”

Comment on the moment.

Something about the location, the journey, the experience.

Offer something small.

A seat, a recommendation, a shared laugh.

Keep it light.

It doesn’t need to be deep — just open.

Be present.

Headphones out, phone down, look around.

You don’t need to be outgoing.

You don’t need to force anything.

Just be open.

Because travel isn’t only about places.

It’s about people.

It’s about shared moments.

It’s about learning — about others, and about yourself.

Confidence builds with each interaction.

Clarity comes with experience.

Comfort grows over time.

And what starts as a simple hello

Can become part of your story.

This is one of those things you carry with you.

Not in your bag.

But in your mindset.

Wherever you go next.
